My son Glen came by for dinner tonight, and I was happy to see him. I had spent most of the day working on my blog, and I explained to Glen that, including the turkey and ham and all the trimmings for Christmas dinner we had bought, my final cost for December's groceries and household goods was less than$80. (This is my final cost after all store credits and rebates are applies.)
"Wow," Glen replied. "I just spent $60 on groceries."
I spent many years buying food to feed our family of five. Now that I save so much money by using coupons and rebates, I still buy as much food as before, but I spend much less. So, I really encouraged Glen to "shop" for his groceries here from my pantry.
First, we needed a plan. So I asked Glen to write down a few of the meals he would like to prepare, and this is what he wrote down: Greek Chicken, Chicken Alfredo, Spaghetti, Lasagna, Chili, Burgers, Beef Stroganoff.
Glen's plan is to prepare about four servings of a couple of dishes, and freeze several portions.
And this is what we packed up for him to take home to prepare some of the meals he wrote down: frozen boneless chicken breast, frozen peas & noodles for Greek Chicken (Glen mixed up homemade Greek seasoning); Ragu spaghetti sauce, spaghetti noodles and frozen ground beef for spaghetti; and one serving of beef stroganoff, microwave ready. We also packed up brownie mix, Froot Loops, Progresso Minestrone,Hamburger Helper, Triscuits, Wheat Thins, and a small box of tea bags.
This was enough for the present time, as Glen has a limited amount of freezer space. We'll work on more meals for our next visit!
