Saving Money Journal: FREE @ Giant, 40 toothbrushes using $1 off coupons from 10-18-09 coupon inserts

I stopped at Giant to check prices for the Gortons Fish Deal. When I got back to the car, I realized that I had forgotten to look for Reach toothbrushes. I had been carrying around a small stack of $1 off Reach toothbrush coupons. I purchase 8-10 copies of the newspaper each week. During 2009, there were 2 coupons for $1 off a Reach toothbrush. The expiration date is not until June, 2010. Giant carries Reach toothbrushes that are $0.99 regularly priced, and I had been able to find been able to purchase about 3 to 6 at a time. I was delighted to find the toothbrush value packs marked $0.99. I checked the price on the shelf, just to make sure the sticker was correct. Sure enough, $0.99 for 2 toothbrushes. I had 10 coupons, so I put 10 packages of toothbrushes in my buggy, and headed to the self checkout register.

But it gets better. I rang up my toothbrushes at the self checkout register. The coupons do not scan at the self checkout register. The coupons are for $1 off, and the toothbrushes are priced at $0.99. I selected "pay cashier," and took my toothbrushes and coupons to the self checkout cashier. The cashier reduced the amount of each coupon to $0.99. Since Giant doubles coupons up to $0.99 , each coupon took off $1.98. By the time I had presented 5 of my 10 coupons, the total was $0.00.
